Credit and Debit Card payments no longer accepted from 1st October 2026
Following changes announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) on 31 March 2026, card companies including Visa and Mastercard have announced they’ll prohibit businesses from charging customers a surcharge on card payments.
As a result, the DEFT payment system is removing the option to pay by card, to focus on fast, fee-free methods.
From Thursday 1 October 2026, you’ll no longer be able to make payments using a credit or debit card.
All other payment options continue to be available including BPAY Payments via mobile or internet banking using the advised DEFT biller code and their DEFT Reference Number as the Customer Reference Number.

What you need to do
If you use a credit or debit card to pay your levies (including those with recurring arrangements such as direct debit), you will need to switch to another payment method.
Remember these changes only apply to payments by credit or debit card.
